π‘οΈ Ways to de-escalate β quick reference for staff
βΌ
Before it escalates
Use a calm, neutral tone and slow your pace.
Give one clear direction at a time; wait before repeating.
Offer a choice when possible (e.g., βYou can sit here or take a break and come backβ).
Validate the feeling without agreeing with the behavior: βI see youβre upset.β
When the student is escalated
Lower your voice; avoid arguing or correcting in the moment.
Give space: step back, reduce eye contact if itβs triggering.
Offer a break or a calm-down option (break card, calm corner, walk with a pass).
Avoid power struggles β donβt insist on an apology or compliance right then.
After the incident
When the student is calm, briefly name what happened and what they can do next time.
Re-enter the routine without long lectures.
Log the incident here so the team stays updated.
