Math Lesson - Beyond 1/2, 1/4, and 1/3
Students will identify, read, and understand uncommon fractions (like 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8, 1/9, 1/10) and recognize them in real-world contexts with 80% accuracy.
Supports math goals for number sense and fraction identification. Expands fraction knowledge beyond common fractions to build comprehensive understanding.
Let's remember the fractions we already know:
Today we're learning NEW fractions! Fractions that are less common but just as important!
Uncommon fractions are fractions we don't see as often as 1/2, 1/4, or 1/3. But they're everywhere in real life!
Let's learn these new fractions:
Rule: Say the top number, then say the bottom number with "-th" or "-s"
1/5 = "one fifth"
1/6 = "one sixth"
1/7 = "one seventh"
1/8 = "one eighth"
1/9 = "one ninth"
1/10 = "one tenth"
"The bigger the bottom number, the smaller the piece!"
1/2 is BIGGER than 1/5 because 2 is smaller than 5!
1/10 is SMALLER than 1/5 because 10 is bigger than 5!
