๐ŸŽฏ Learning Objective

Students will add and subtract fractions with like denominators with 80% accuracy.

๐Ÿ“‹ IEP Goal Alignment

Supports math goals for multi-step operations with fractions. Builds on last week's fraction identification work.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Warm-Up Review 5 min

Quick Fraction Review from Last Week

Let's remember what we learned about fractions:

๐Ÿ• 1/4 + 1/4 = ?

Think: If you have 1 slice of pizza and get 1 more slice (out of 4 total), how many slices do you have?

Rule #1: Same Denominators = Easy Add!

When fractions have the same bottom number (denominator), just add or subtract the top numbers!

2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5
  • Keep the bottom number (5) the same
  • Add the top numbers: 2 + 1 = 3
  • Answer: 3/5

Rule #2: Subtraction Works the Same Way!

4/6 - 1/6 = 3/6
  • Keep the bottom number (6) the same
  • Subtract the top numbers: 4 - 1 = 3
  • Answer: 3/6

Memory Trick ๐Ÿง

"Don't change the DENOM, just work on the NUMER!"

Denominator = Bottom number (stays same)

Numerator = Top number (add or subtract)
